It’s almost as though we evolved to interact with people in person instead of via technology. But I suppose this problem has existed since the invention of writing. “I sent a letter to my dear one, but a week has passed with no reply.”

Yeah, ghosting isn’t new, but I think our sense of patience has waned.

I can’t say that this is fair. While you’re not wrong about average attention span, there are many reasons why someone’s sense of anxiety is higher now than it would have been a several decades or a century ago.

But also, it comes from the design of the platforms we have to use for communication. Both, from the point of the recipient, where unless you go out of your way to set things up, everything is pulling for your attention. And from the point of view of the sender. Read receipts can be difficult for those some whose brains are wired a particular way. It’s a feature that sells itself based on, “be sure your message went through to prevent miscommunication”, but it registers as, “this person has read and comprehended what you sent” as a way of keeping you on the platform for the response.

Also, whose platform design do you think it is that is designed to kill the attention span of every user?
